What Is ΔE (Delta E) Color Difference in Anodized Aluminum Handles?
ΔE (Delta E) is a single number that describes how different two colors look in a defined color space—usually CIELAB / L*a*b*. For anodized aluminum handles, it quantifies the color difference between a production handle and an approved master sample, or between two handles in the same batch/assembly.
In CIELAB:
L* = lightness (0 = black, 100 = white)
a* = green ↔ red
b* = blue ↔ yellow
ΔE is the “distance” between two sets of L*a*b* values. A smaller ΔE means the colors are closer; ΔE = 0 means identical.
Common interpretation
ΔE < 1.0 – Not noticeable to the human eye
ΔE 1–2 – Slight difference, visible only on close inspection
ΔE 2–3.5 – Noticeable when parts are compared side by side
ΔE > 3.5–5 – Clearly visible; often rejected for cosmetic handles
ΔE > 5 – Obvious mismatch, looks like a different color
For anodized aluminum handles
Anodizing color is influenced by:
aluminum alloy (6061, 6063, 5052, 7075, etc.)
temper and material lot
surface prep: machined, brushed, bead-blasted, polished
anodize type: Type II dyed/clear, Type III hard anodize
bath chemistry, temperature, voltage, dye concentration, sealing
So two “black anodized” handles can still have different undertones—warm/brown vs blue/gray—and that shows up as ΔE.
Typical tolerances
Premium consumer / electronics-style handles: ΔE ≤ 1.0–2.0
Architectural / industrial hardware: ΔE ≤ 3.0–5.0 may be acceptable
Hidden/internal parts: looser tolerances are often OK
Formula matters
Specify the formula, e.g.:
“ΔE ≤ 1.5 per CIEDE2000 (ΔE00) vs signed reference sample, measured under D65, 10° observer.”
Older ΔE76 is simpler but less accurate for metals and near-neutral grays; ΔE00 is preferred for anodized aluminum cosmetics.

For anodized aluminum handles, ΔE is the objective “how far off is the color” number used instead of vague terms like “a bit darker” or “slightly bronzed.” It lets buyer and supplier agree on a measurable pass/fail limit.
